A DOSE OF DUPAS
Rebecca understands the power of poetry. Her mother and sister shared their original writing when she was young. Her sister wrote an amazing poem about being Black and her mother, who'd written several poems over her lifetime, shared a poem about overcoming mountains. It is no surprise that Rebecca's body of work is rooted in overcoming life's obstacles and navigating relationships as a Black woman. Rebecca, an educator at heart, has been lauded for her uncanny ability to write what others have always thought but were unable to articulate. Her work is described as both thought-provoking and relatable. Her voice and stage presence inspired many to refer to her as Ms. Dupas while on stage or Dr. Dupas long before she pursued her doctoral degree.
After graduating college, Rebecca was invited to host what was then the longest running weekly open mic venue in the city, Warm Wednesdays. Years later, she founded VerbatiMondays, The Antidote, and Talk to Tuesdays, the first open-mic at a major restaurant chain in Baltimore. Rebecca hosted monthly open-mic nights at several Busboys and Poets locations and served as a guest host at other events in the city. Stepping outside of the open-mic arena, Rebecca founded and hosted Body of Work, a closed-mic poetry experience that featured a single artist and interview. The event attracted professional poets from several states along the East Coast. She also organized and facilitated The Host Retreat, a quarterly workshop for poetry and event hosts in the tri-state area. Workshops featured veteran event and radio hosts who shared expert experience on marketing, event planning, budgeting, and more. Her contributions to the poetry scene were housed under her event-based company, A DOSE OF DUPAS.
